New York’s F1 ‘Eau Rouge rival’ would be “perfect”

Coulthard spoke exclusively to Autosport at the IWC basketball event in Schaffhausen ahead of the Miami Grand Prix – featuring seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton and Hollywood movie stars James Marsden and Simu Liu – Jersey, the never-before-raced street circuit venue in Weehawken, NSW, could complete F1’s list of US races, says Coulthard.

In 2012, Coulthard drove a Red Bull RB7 show car as part of Hermann Tilke’s 3.2-mile Port Imperial layout, which uses streets overlooking the Hudson River. The event, under the banner of the “United States Grand Prix”, was included in the 2013 F1 calendar until contract disputes ended the programme.

He said the spectacular location would be the next “perfect location” for F1 in America, as the track’s 150-foot change in height would be one of the biggest on the calendar.

“A few years ago, we tried to have a race in Weehawken, New York,” Coulthard said. “I remember running in one of the Red Bull show cars. I drove part of the circuit in an F1 car and it was unbelievable.

“Across from Manhattan, there’s an area that makes Eau Rouge at The Spa look like something for kids! If they could relaunch the program there, I think it would be the perfect place.”

Even if Las Vegas joins Austin and Miami in 2023, Coulthard believes there is still room for another event in the US.

“Given the size of the land, I think we can play four games here in the future,” he added. “That’s the utopian dream — breaking up America.

“They’re all going to have their own taste and they have to. It’s very different from state to state in America, so game to game – every game has to reflect that.

“Austin is what we’re used to – a proper track, so we show up and race. Miami is kind of a hybrid track, and Las Vegas is a playground for grown-ups. In a city, not in a venue, The event will definitely take over. As a Saturday night game, there will be a lot of buzz.”

Aston Martin F1 team principal Mike Clarke echoed Coulthard’s view on a fourth US race, and also believes the New York Grand Prix would be an attractive addition to the F1 calendar.

Asked by Autosport about the feasibility of adding a race in New York, he replied: “All of us would love to come here (to America) and I think as long as you’re careful not to oversaturate the market, it’ll be a good race. quantity.

“When you draw out the calendar – with all these distances and sustainability discussions – you quickly run the risk of having too many races in one area. But I want to play a fourth race here, no problem. “
