Max Verstappen wins Miami GP from P9 on grid

Published

His teammate Sergio Perez led from pole and, like most drivers, was on medium tyres, while Verstappen’s woes in qualifying limited him to ninth, so he started ninth in tough conditions.

As expected, Verstappen led the race and led the middle of the race after Perez’s pit stop.

He got back behind Perez after Verstappen stopped, but quickly overtook his team-mate to secure his third win of the year.

How the 2023 F1 Miami Grand Prix unfolded

Perez maintained his pole position heading into Turn 1, ahead of Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and Carlos Sainz (Ferrari). Behind them, Pierre Gasly (Alpine) and George Russell (Mercedes) passed Kevin Magnussen (Haas) for fourth and fifth respectively. Further back, Lando Norris (McLaren) was spotted from behind by Nyck de Vries (AlphaTauri) at the first corner, dragging them to the end of the field.

Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) passed Magnussen at Turn 11 for sixth, while Verstappen held on to ninth on the first lap as he was on the hard tyres. But at the start of lap four he overtook Leclerc and Magnussen for sixth, with Magnussen taking advantage by jumping back in front of Leclerc and they briefly ran for three laps.

Perez shrugged off Alonso’s DRS range in front, with Sainz right behind. Verstappen passed Russell on lap eight into Turn 17 and repeated the move on Gasly a lap later for fourth. At Turn 1 at the start of lap 10, Russell also passed Gasly a few corners later.

Verstappen was now 4.6 seconds behind leader Perez and set about closing the gap on Sainz. Verstappen DRS overtook Sainz into Turn 11 on lap 14 and repeated the move on Alonso a lap later, leading Red Bull 1-2 on lap 15 – a gap that had narrowed to 3.7 seconds.

In the battle for the best position remaining, Sainz was on Alonso’s tail when he pitted at number 19 – locking the brakes as he entered the pit lane – before rejoining Heavy traffic. He had to win over Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Nico Hulkenberg (Haas), but was penalized anyway for speeding in the pit lane and was given a five-second penalty.

Perez was the first Red Bull to pit on lap 21, giving Verstappen the lead after 2.2 seconds. Alonso pitted from second on lap 25, extending his time in the medium-speed car, after rejoining Sainz on the road, but taking the lead given his penalty.

Regardless, Alonso passed Sainz just before the half-way mark at Turn 11 and passed the long-running Esteban Ocon (Alpine) a few laps later to reclaim third. Russell got into the frame again and passed Sainz on lap 38 for fourth.

Verstappen proved to be faster on the old tyres, than Perez on the new, and pitted on lap 46 – despite his comparatively slow 3.1 seconds – while Max Then he went back behind his teammate and put on new tires. But Perez ran 25 laps on the hard tyre, and despite his best efforts to defend, Verstappen passed him by 10 laps at Turn 1 and opened the gap by more than five seconds. .

Alonso was third ahead of Russell and Sainz. Hamilton surged to sixth in the closing stages, ahead of Leclerc and Gasly. Ocon and Magnussen became the scorers.

Perez “cannot afford another zero” in F1 2023 season

The Red Bull driver was last in Sunday’s race and was out in Q1 qualifying.

He went on to make five pit stops in a dismal race that saw him twice passed by team-mate and race winner Max Verstappen, who now leads the championship by 39 points.

Although it marked Perez’s first game of the season without scoring, the Mexican said his error was “costly” and “unacceptable”.

He said: “We paid for my mistake and it was very costly. I just have to apologize to my whole team because it was unacceptable for this kind of mistake to be made.

“I have to move on and learn from it, I can’t afford another zero in the tournament.”

Despite the poor finish, Perez had a “very good” start to the race, finishing 15th on lap 30, but dropped back into the standings after a couple of incidents and a period of rain.

He also collided with Haas driver Kevin Magnussen in the corner on lap 34, breaking his front wing.

Perez said he “didn’t know what happened” but was “considerably hurt” by the incident.

He added: “It went well. Unfortunately I hit traffic early on and that put us back where we were. Then it rained and we were one of the last to pit.

“Then I cut the wall and it all became a mess. Me and Magnussen broke my front wing and he just came out of the chicane (deeply) and it went bad.

“When you’re in those positions, you’re always taking a lot of risks.”

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said it had been a “bad weekend” for Perez, blaming the poor result on a crash in qualifying that “put you at a disadvantage”.

He also said Perez was inside Ocon’s maintenance window before getting stuck behind slow-moving traffic.

Horner said: “We took a very aggressive strategy. Stopped on the first lap and you could see how fast he was in the free space and how much the others were saving.

“He actually came back inside the pit window on Esteban Ocon, and then (Logan) Sargeant and the slow car started to struggle and, of course, you couldn’t overtake.

“Then he got involved in a melee with (George) Russell and damaged the front wing. It was just one of those weekends where he got nothing done.

“He saved a lot of money in the pool, so he might need a new pair of underwear after that.

“For him, it’s just one of those weekends where[he should]turn the page and I think for him, the sooner he gets to Barcelona the better.”
