F1 Monaco GP qualifying – Start time, how to watch & more

Verstappen turned the tables in FP2 after Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz struggled with curbs and bumps in the RB19 in FP1.

The Dutchman’s benchmark effort on the soft 1m 12.462s was 0.065s quicker than Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari, and Verstappen’s era lead was cemented when Sainz crashed.

The Spaniard hit the wall at the entrance to the swimming pool, broke the steering wheel and slid helplessly into the barrier at the exit.

Sainz finished third after a setback in an otherwise promising day, with Fernando Alonso 0.22s behind in his Aston Martin, which has rolled out a series of updates for the first time this year.

Another car with notable upgrades, the Mercedes W14, finished sixth in the hands of three-time Monaco Grand Prix winner Lewis Hamilton. Team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged that the unique nature of Monaco made it difficult to judge the effectiveness of its changes, but said “at least we haven’t seen any behavior from the car that would be considered really negative”.

Sainz wasn’t the only driver to find walls around the treacherous street circuit, with two red flags in FP1. The first was caused by debris from Nico Hulkenberg’s crash into a wall at Nouvelle Chicane, which resulted in a momentary left rear puncture, while Alex Albon suffered an even bigger one when the rear of his Williams came out and caused damage at Sainte Devote. Injures both left corners.
