De Vries admits speculation over AlphaTauri F1 seat is “not a shock”

The F2 and Formula E champion is tied for bottom of the standings with Williams newcomer Logan Sargent as the pair failed to score after five rounds.

Rumors began to swirl about de Vries’ future as commentators then pinned on Red Bull third driver and eight-time Grand Prix winner Daniel Ricciardo to have a customary AlphaTauri seat fitting earlier this month.

Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko has reportedly set next month’s Spanish Grand Prix as the deadline to see de Vries make significant progress, but this is Before the cancellation of the flood-hit Emilia Romagna GP.

Ahead of this weekend’s race in Monaco, de Vries addressed speculation over whether his grid position was safe and admitted it was not “shocking” to hear the uncertainty.

He said: “Yes (I feel safe in my seat). And, it’s not a shock to me. It’s normal. It’s the industry. It’s always been like that in Red Bull and in Formula One. .I really believe it’s the same as earlier in the season.

“You always have to perform, you always have to deliver. It’s been that way my whole career.

“As a driver you’re always fighting to survive, you always need to deliver to continue your career successfully. It’s normal. It’s always been like that.”

De Vries added that he tried to avoid the reports, but information about his future had been filtered out.

De Vries went on to dismiss the idea of increased pressure, arguing that a larger F1 audience was to blame for the increased scrutiny of his AlphaTauri post.

He said: “Honestly, I believe there is no more pressure than at any other time. In fact, the only difference in Formula 1 is that there is more noise around it.

“Especially when there’s a little bit of a gap, there’s more speculation and talk. That’s probably the biggest difference compared to any other champion. But in terms of work, everyone needs to do their job and perform.”

De Vries was injured by frequent crashes. He retired in qualifying in Azerbaijan before hitting the wall to retire. He also clashed with McLaren’s Lando Norris in Miami.

But the driver didn’t shy away from the mistakes, saying: “I definitely think I’ve made too many mistakes personally. I’m going to be very open about that.

“I also believe that in certain moments the tempo has been strong and that has encouraged me and given me confidence.

“But I wasn’t able to execute it at the end and put it together. But I believe the velocity has come.”
